With any technology, there are always plenty of questions – and Cel-Fi is no exception. From how it all works to some of the finer points, we’re always delighted to see that people are interested in hearing more.
So we talked to T-Mobile – which has been offering Cel-Fi products since 2011 – to find out what some of the most frequently asked questions are. Here are some selected highlights:
How does Cel-Fi work?
Cel-Fi consists of a Window Unit (WU) and a Coverage Unit (CU). Users place the WU in an area with the strongest signal from the carrier network. The CU is placed in the area where the best signal quality is most needed. The two units communicate wirelessly with one another, giving you significantly better voice quality and greater data throughput in an area of up to 13,000 sq. ft. It does not require an Internet connection, external antennas or cabling.
Is it legal to use signal boosters?
Mobile operators have adopted an extremely strict policy against the use of consumer-class boosters on their networks due to interference issues. Because Cel-Fi is designed to be carrier specific, it is the only smart signal booster that is fully compliant with the new Code of Federal Regulations (CFR20.21) for signal boosters as defined by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
What makes Cel-Fi different from other signal boosters?
Cel-Fi uses intelligent, self-organizing algorithms to maximize the area of coverage for users. Because it’s plug and play, it doesn’t require any new equipment or changes to existing network infrastructure, or mobile devices. Unlike wideband boosters, it is designed to work on specific carrier networks, so it does not cause signal interference.
Where can I find it?
