Wanted: Creative Thinkers for Android Wear

We often use the phrase “always on” but Google’s recent announcement of its “light version” of Android for wearables is taking it literally. Called Android Wear, it’s a platform that’s specifically designed for smartwatches, and if it all goes well, it could succeed where others have faltered.

In true Google style it will be launching an SDK so that developers can turn things up a few notches on the wearables front. And with all sorts of new devices and formats in the works, indoor coverage is simply going to have to get bigger and better than ever. Especially when Google’s full wearable SDK comes out later this year.

It will be interesting to see how this will play out, given that it’s the first serious attempt at wearable platforms after the lackluster response to Samsung and Sony’s foray into smartwatches. Qualcomm threw its hat into the ring last year with its operating system for a smartwatch platform, and recently released The Toq SDK to spur app development. Now Google has the market clout to draw widespread developer support, which will take the category miles beyond where it is now.

With Android Wear, multiple manufacturers are getting into the mix including Asus, HTC. LG and Samsung – along with Fossil. With so much room for developers to play in, it’s going to be a busy few months ahead. And given we’re passionate about all things related to indoor coverage, we’re definitely keeping our eyes on this one.
