Consumers Spend 85% of Time on Smartphones in Apps

It probably wouldn’t surprise you to find out that consumers spend 85% of their time on smartphones using native apps (i.e. an app written specifically for a device or platform, such as the iPhone Camera or FaceTime). This statement would make you think there are dozens and dozens of apps in use. But in reality, more than 8 out of 10 of those same consumers actually use only five non-native apps they’ve installed from the App Store. At least that’s what Forrester had to say in a recently released study on mobile behavior.

Of course, the five specific apps in question vary from user to user, whether it’s social media, gaming, or instant messaging – or a combination thereof. Here’s a quick breakdown of the overall numbers for you:

  • At 21% of smartphone minutes, communications and social apps account for the most usage (not including voice calls or text messaging).
  • Social networks as a category represent 14% of all smartphone usage, which translates into 25 minutes per day
  • Facebook on its own accounts for 13% of US minutes spent on apps, with Google next at 12%
  • Other high app usage includes Amazon (3%), Apple (3%), Yahoo (2%), Microsoft (1%) and eBay (1%)

The amount of time people are now spending on their smartphones is all the more reason to consider Cel-Fi when indoor coverage doesn’t make the grade.
